LEED Building: What Is It? Let's Learn (Green Living)

LEED or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design is one of the most well-known and widely used green building certification programs in the world today. LEED building is not only beneficial for the environment, it likewise offers a number of advantages to the homeowner. LEED Building: What Is It? Let's Learn (Green Living).

As the green building movement became more and more popular these days, GreenStar, LEED, BREEAM, and many other rating systems have also come to the surface. Many local, state and national governments across the world have adopted the green building concept. Some of them even provide various incentives for its widespread development. Because of this, many developers from the private sector, public agencies, and institutional owners have also accepted the concept of green buildings.

With the number of rating systems available today, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system is considered as the game changer. Since the first decade of the 21st century, buildings and homes that were built in accordance with the LEED rating system had offered a great impact on the reduction of water consumption, material use, and CO2 emissions.

What is LEED?

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design or LEED is among the most commonly used green building certification programs or rating systems in the world. It was developed by U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), a non-profit organization that was established in 1993.

LEED is now recognized globally both as a symbol of excellence and as an international standard for green or environmentally sound buildings. It includes specific rating systems not only for the design of the green homes, buildings, and neighborhoods but also for their construction, maintenance, and operations. LEED was devised to help building operators and owners become more environmentally responsible and to help them utilize all sorts of resources more efficiently.

Why build a LEED building?

The earth is no longer as sustainable as it was a few decades ago. This is a fact almost all people in the world are already aware of. While many companies and government agencies are already doing their share to sustain the environment, there are also countless of private individuals today who take their part in the green movement campaign. One of the things that many people do to help save the earth is to build green houses and to live an eco-friendly lifestyle.

But a LEED certified home is not only about sustaining the environment, it also includes improving the way of living of the homeowner. Because a home constructed to LEED certification standards provides a better quality indoor atmosphere and a healthier overall environment, you are sure that you and your family will become healthier and safer against all kinds of harmful contaminants that may cause illnesses. The enhanced ventilation system also helps you feel better and enables you to breathe easier.

One other reason why you should build a LEED building is that it is much more valuable than a typical and conservative home. If you need to put it on the market, you will also be able to sell it faster than an ordinary home.

Apart from that, a LEED home can also help you save money by reducing up to 30% energy consumption and water usage. Its maintenance costs are also lower compared to a home built to the International Energy Conservation Code.

Why Choose to Go Eco-Friendly? (Green Living)

Why Choose to Go Eco-Friendly? (Green Living)

Why Choose to Go Eco-Friendly? (Green Living)

Why Choose to Go Eco-Friendly? (Green Living)

More and more people are choosing to buy eco-friendly products and live their lives in a more environmentally conscious way. And while care for the environment is a primary concern for most people there are other advantages to eco-friendly products. Why Choose to Go Eco-Friendly? (Green Living)

People are becoming more eco-aware these days as the threat of global warming and climate change continues to threaten the planet with its effects seen in recent bad weather in the UK and around the globe brings the reality home to people.

And other aspects to the environment trouble people too. Ever burgeoning land-fills and restrictions on what we throw away are forcing people to think more closely about recycling. Yet, there are some other advantages too going eco that many people realise when they embark down a greener path.

As many eco-products are about saving energy, this has an effect of not only reducing the amount of electricity we consume but can lead to lower utility bills too.

With products like energy saving light bulbs, radiator panels and electricity monitors, able to reduce our energy consumption dramatically it also has the effect of driving down our quarterly bills too.

And products like solar powered chargers, used to recharge many of the popular gadgets that we all use these days, such as laptops, mobile phones and MP3 players, have other benefits. Solar chargers can recharge these items on the move, away from a plug socket, something standard chargers can't do.

And many eco clothes such as bamboo clothing can be even more comfortable and warmer than conventional clothing. While implementing solar powered garden lighting and security lights mean that you can install lighting, cheaply, without the need of an electrician or having to mess with electrics.

Eco friendly products are therefore, not just about saving the planet but can save you time and money too whilst still ensuring you are doing your bit to reduce the threat of global warming, reduce landfills and help to make the planet a nicer place to live for the next generation.

5 Eco Friendly Products That Really Make a Difference (Green Living)

5 Eco Friendly Products That Really Make a Difference (Green Living)

There is a massive range of eco-friendly products on the market, many of which make incredible claims that either can't be substantiated, or are just not true. For some people this can lead to them being totally put-off from buying green as they find it difficult to sort through the eco snake oils and actually practical items that save both money and energy. 5 Eco Friendly Products That Really Make a Difference (Green Living).

There are, however, some fantastic eco-friendly products, which if more people used, would make a huge difference to the environment - and to their pockets. So, to help people distinguish between the wild and ridiculous and the real beneficial eco products,

Here are five really eco products that can really make a difference to both the environment and your pocket:

Energy saving light bulbs

Lighting is essential to everybody, whether it be in the home or office, few of us could do without the electric lightbulbs, and while energy saving bulbs have been around for over a decade now, there are still those that are using the traditional incandescent bulbs. Energy saving light bulbs use far less power than traditional bulbs - with comparative savings of over £100 made on the lifetime of the lightbulb - that's about £10 per year for each bulb, and you only have to count your light fittings to work out how much money, and energy, that will save you.

Radiator panels

Radiator panels are simple but ingenious devices that can drastically cut heating costs. They reflect heat, normally lost at the back of the radiator, back into the room - boosting power output of radiators by up to a third.

They are easy to fit too and require no plumbing or radiator removal. There are a wide range of them on the market from mini-radiator panels to simpler reflective foil - all of which can cut your fuel bills by up to a quarter.

Standby Savers

With so many electrical items from TV's, DVD players, set-top boxes and computers having a stand-by mode, huge savings can be made by turning these items off. A device on stand-by is still using power and while nobody wants to go around plugging and unplugging items, standby savers do the job for you and will prevent all this wasted power.

Solar powered chargers

With so many rechargeable gadgets about, from mobile phones to MP3 players, recharging fro free can make a real collective difference. Solar chargers can allow these devices to be recharged completely free - and they also proven another common problem: when transformer chargers are left plugged in - they use power even when nothing is attached to them; another way of cutting back on waste.

Energy monitor

While not directly a way of saving money electricity and energy monitors do allow you to identify high usage areas of the home, wastage and times when too much power is being consumed. Electricity monitors really help you cut down on energy use and indirectly can make huge savings when you realise where energy is being wantonly wasted.

Learn 6 Eco-Friendly Tips for Saving Money Around the House (Green Living)

Did You Know?

  • If every person in just alone recycled his or her newspaper just one day a week, we would save over 36 million trees a year. You can save a tree for every four feet of paper you recycle. It takes half as much energy to make recycled newspaper as it takes to make fresh newsprint from trees.
  •     In the past thirty years, the population nearly doubled. However, in that same period, public demand for water more than tripled! We use an average of 100 gallons of water each day - enough to fill 1,600 drinking glasses.
  •     It takes a substantial amount of energy to distribute and care for the water you use every day. The public water supply and treatment facilities consume about 56 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year-enough electricity to power more than 5 million homes for an entire year. For example, letting your faucet run for five minutes uses about as much energy as letting a 60-watt light bulb run for 14 hours.
  •     If all households installed water-efficient appliances, the country would save more than 3 trillion gallons of water and more than $18 billion dollars per year!
  •     If one out of every 100 homes was replaced with water-efficient fixtures, we could save about 100 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year - avoiding 80,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions. The greenhouse gas savings would be equal to getting rid of nearly 15,000 automobiles from the road for one year.
  •     If they laid all the glass bottles and jars collected through recycling next to each other in a straight line, it would reach the moon and half way back to earth.

I don't know about you but I was flabbergasted when I read these eco-green facts. It is astonishing how much waste we create in the comforts of our own homes. By making simple changes in our daily lives, we can make a huge difference in the world that we live in. Making simple eco-green changes in our lifestyle can have a huge impact in our lives that will help us save money, energy and help prevent the destruction of our planet. At the rate, we are going the phrase; "destruction of the planet" is not far-fetched. Every non-green choice we make affects our planet and quality of our life.

The Big Eco-Green Impact - It's Time to Make a Difference

You do not have to change the way you live completely to help save the planet. By making, a few simple alterations in your lifestyle, you can save tons of energy, water, money, our life span, and our planet just by going green. Below are five tips to help you save money, energy and the world we live in. There are tons of ways we can make our lives greener. Below are just a couple of tips on how to start greening your life. Use these tips to help you travel down a greener path.

Niche the Staples and go staple-free - Staples have become an environmental hazard to our environment. Amazingly, Staple Free Staplers use absolutely no staples. Therefore, you don't have to worry about anymore torn papers, hooked clothing, painful fingers caused by the poking of a sharp metal staple, and no more stressing yourself over a jammed stapler either.Staple Free Staplers is an environmentally friendly device for the home or even for your office, which simply cuts a little flap in the corner of your papers, folds the flap back and tucks it into a tiny slit, and it dose it as quickly and easily as an old regular stapler. It is not as permanent as a staple, and the limit is five pages, but for what it does, it is a great product to have in the comforts of your own home. The pages can be pulled apart without tearing, under ordinary circumstances they hold together very well. The Staple Free Stapler is safe for all ages, and maintenance free. There are no metal prongs to catch your finger, sweater, or important documents on, and you will not have to spend your valuable time undoing a staple jam.

Stop Spending Your Money On Toxic Products for the Home - Do you know what is in the household cleaning products you are using? The fact is, most household cleaning products on market shelves today contain many harmful and hazardous toxins and chemicals. These hazardous toxic substances can enter the body through ingestion, inhalation, or absorption through the skin, which can affect the heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, and the brain and have the potential to cause many serious health problems. Natural cleaning products on the other hand are non-toxic and much safer to use because they are made from natural, wholesome, ingredients. When it comes to cleaning and disinfecting your home, they work just as effectively if not better than the chemical products that sell in thousands of stores.Natural cleaning products are not only safer to use, they also save you money because they last longer and cost less. Helpful Tip: if you want to have a pretty scent in your home add 100% natural essential oils to your home made recipes such as tea tree oil, lavender or lemon oil, which not only provide a fresh aroma and scent, but also have natural antiseptic, antifungal, and disinfectant properties contained within them.

Natural Works Better - I had just redone my kitchen. Of course, because it is in style I had to get stainless steel appliances. Big mistake when you have three kids! Stainless steel may look nice but the problem is you can see everyone's fingerprints and I would have to clean these appliances everyday or they looked like they have not been cleaned in ages, all this from my little kids greasy little hands! The products to make these appliances shine would cost a bundle too and not all of them work that well. Most of these products leave smudges that are noticeable to the naked eye and toxic to the environment, polluting the air we breathe and leading to slow destruction of our bodies. After researching trying, to find a better alternative than these toxic stainless steel cleaners that does not work well. I found information saying that vegetable oil works the best when it comes to cleaning and shining stainless steel appliances. I thought to myself, "vegetable oil? How could vegetable oil clean stainless steel?" So I said to myself, "What the heck, I'll try it!" Let me tell you I never used a better product in my life. I have spent a bunch of money on stainless products and nothing cleaned my stainless steel appliances better than vegetable oil. The shine was astonishing.

Do You Have a Scratch On Your Stainless Steel Appliance? Not to Worry Because I Have An Eco-Green Solution That Works. - We learned that greener is better when it comes to cleaning, but did you know that vegetable oil can get rid of the scratches on your stainless steel appliances too. That's right, you heard me! One day I was cleaning my gas stove and I was lifting the black iron grills off the stove so I could clean the metal surface. Of course, I was in a rush because I had a 1001 other things on my mind that I needed to accomplish, so as I was lifting the grills in a rush and hit the front of the microwave which is stainless steel and I slightly scratched the surface. Well, I was stressed to say the least. If it were not new, I probably would not have cared as much, but since I just purchased it; it annoyed me to no end. So, I went to the hardware store and purchased $60.00 worth of products claimed to remove scratches. They smelled horrible, and they did not work. The scratch was still there. So, I went online and researched how to remove scratches off stainless steel naturally. And do you know what it told me, use vegetable oil, and rub it in a circular motion. So, I did! Not only does shine and clean your stainless steel. It took out the scratch! Talk about eco- green miracle products.

Turn off the lights when you leave the room - Electricity bills are typically one of the highest bills a household gets each month. Turning off the lights when you leave the room as well as turning off any appliances and electronics that are not in use are simple ways to help you conserve energy and save money. Electricity generation is also a big cause for the pollution we have because many energy companies still rely on burning coal to provide energy for homes and businesses. By actively making sure that you are not wasting any electricity, you will simultaneously cut down on the amount of pollution on our planet as well as cut down on your electricity bill.

Make the switch to CFL bulbs - CFL bulbs, also known as compact fluorescent lamp bulbs, cost more money to purchase than regular incandescent light bulbs. However, when you factor in how much money you save in the end with CFL bulbs, you will see that these more eco-friendly bulbs really pay for themselves with the savings you will encounter. CFL bulbs typically last up to 15 times longer than a conventional incandescent bulb, and they have the capability of putting out the same amount of light as a regular bulb but while using half the energy. In fact, one CFL bulb can save buyers more than $30 in energy costs in its lifetime. If you replace all of the lights in the house with CFL bulbs and make it a habit to turn off the lights when not in use, you could save hundreds of dollars in electricity costs annually.

Thought for the Day

Everything we do every day has an impact on our planet - good or bad. You have the power to control most of your choices from where you live, to what you buy, eat, the products you use to light your home to where you shop. All these things can have a huge impact on our lives and our planet. Living a greener lifestyle will improve your health, save you tons of money, and, improve your overall quality of life.

Best Advice for Choosing The Best Sleep Mattress For Back Pain

Best Advice for Choosing The Best Sleep Mattress For Back Pain

Best Advice for Choosing The Best Sleep Mattress For Back Pain

Best Advise for Choosing The Best Sleep Mattress For Back Pain

I am sure you have heard from family members or friends that they were experiencing sleepless nights. Their excuses range from stress from work, relationship and financial problems to medical conditions. In many cases it could be simply the mattress they are sleeping on. Let's check the Best Advice for Choosing The Best Sleep Mattress For Back Pain.

Sleeping on the wrong type of mattress not only lead to sleeplessness, but can cause aches and chronic back pain. If you are already suffering from back pain then the wrong mattress may worsen your back pain. Conversely, the right type of mattress will help you sleep well and wake up feeling refreshed.

So what is the best mattress to sleep on especially if you have back pain? The answer is "none".

It all depends on the person's preference, lifestyle, sleeping position and medical condition, if any. There is no single mattress or sleeping posture that is the best for all people. What is perfect for one person may not work as well for another. Scientific studies on the correlation between mattress and back problems have also been inconclusive. What we do know is the fact that your whole body will relax while you sleep. Therefore it is very important to sleep well in a good mattress so that your back pain can heal faster.

With the dizzying variety of mattresses at your furniture malls and specialty bed stores, each claiming to be the best, choosing the right one is a real challenge. Here are some tips.

Sleeping Position and Matching Mattress

The type of mattress that is most suitable for your body depends to some extent your sleeping position. So it is wise to examine the different types of sleeping positions. The most comfortable position to sleep in is determined by personal preferences and the type of back pain you are suffering from. Essentially there are three common sleep positions: on your back, on your stomach and on your sides.

For back sleepers, putting a small pillow underneath your knees will reduce the stress on your spine and maintain the natural curve of your back. This is generally the best sleeping position with mattress that offers the right support for the back. If you sleep on your stomach, then a firmer support surface is required to prevent spinal distortion which may lead to back pain.

Side sleepers are subject to pressure points as their weights rest on the smallest areas of the body and this result in bad circulation. Placing a bolster between their knees will help reduce the stress. Mattress with a softer and plush feel will be preferred.

Choosing The Best Sleep Mattress

It is not always possible to sleep on a mattress before buying it, but at least lie or sit on it at different sections until you feel comfortable about it. There are two important factors you have to consider when evaluating a mattress: good back support and comfort.

Support depends on the coil type, coil count and connections between the coils. The coils should be made of steel and the thicker the coil, the more support the mattress will provide.

The coil count ranges from 300 to 800 per mattress and generally more coils offer better support. The coils must be interconnected by wires to prevent misalignment.

Remember to check these three important data before buying.

Other things you should ask the salesperson are the structures of the middle padding, insulation padding and the spring box, which is the foundation of the mattress.

Comfort depends mainly on the upholstery and edge materials. The upholstery is the layers of foam and fabric that separate you from the coils. Plush designs like "pillow top" offer thick padding for a rich luxurious feel. If you prefer a less plush feel, select the padding with less upholstery. This is really a personal preference. The edge of the mattress should also be made of strong material to prevent sagging and roll off when you sleep near the edge.

More coils and thicker padding are generally more expensive and better in quality, but it is not an assurance that the mattress is more supportive and comfortable.

A soft and plush mattress may provide you with a comfortable feeling but not the support your back needs. The outcome is you may wake up the next morning with stiffness and aches in your body. If the mattress is too firm it may not conform to the natural curves of your spine and again your back will suffer from the same effects.

Do not be deceived by advertisements with bold claims. The best mattress for back pain provides good support and high comfort level, but is not necessarily the most expensive. Mattresses that are expensive are normally due to high quality materials used but not necessary better. Ultimately it is the body of the person who is responsible for deciding if a mattress is good or bad.

So you have to find a balance between good support and comfort level. If you can sleep well and wake up feeling refreshed without aches and stiffness then it is the best mattress for you.

We spend about 30% of our lifetime sleeping on a mattress so we should invest a bit more on a really good mattress.

If after spending all the effort in evaluating and buying a good mattress you still have persistent back pain, then it may not be due to the mattress, but an underlying back condition. The best advice is see your doctor for a complete and detail check on your health.

Know the Some History Facts About the Memory Foam Mattress

A lot of experts say that the memory foam mattress is a technological innovation that has changed the way we sleep. This is because it no longer uses the spring coil which has been the convention for so many years. But besides that, there are still other facts about the memory foam mattress you should know. Let's Know the Some History Facts About the Memory Foam Mattress.

Memory foam was developed in 1966 under a contract by NASA's Ames Research Center to improve the safety of aircraft cushions. Ames scientist Chiharu Kubokawa and Charles A. Yost of the Stencel Aero Engineering Corporation were major contributors to this project. The temperature-sensitive memory foam was initially referred to as “slow spring back foam”; Yost called it "temper foam".[2] Created by feeding gas into a polymer matrix, the foam has an open-cell solid structure that matches pressure against it, yet slowly springs back to its original shape.[3]

The memory foam mattress was initially developed in the 1970's for use of by astronauts to help them deal with the enormous G-forces they encounter during liftoff and re-entry in the earth's atmosphere.

But this project was not successful and in the 1980's, people discovered another means for it and it was designed for sleeping. With that you can say that the memory foam mattress you see today is not a product of NASA but rather its by-product.

This product was only launched in the market in the early 1990's. Initially, the public did not really take notice of it because it was very expensive and also because it was very difficult to manufacture. In the years that followed, companies were able to develop it at a lower production cost and many of these were initially used as hospital beds.

From the memory foam mattress, companies produced other products to compliment it while the rest were used for other purposes. Examples of these include mattress toppers, pillows, office furniture, automobile seat padding, infant cribs, car seats, wheelchair cushions, hip pads, sweat pads, computer cases, movie theater seating, pistol gloves, ear plugs and tennis racquets.

The big difference between the regular foam and that of memory foam is the structure. Regular foam mattresses are made of up closed cells which are billions of balloons tightly squeezed together with little air between them. Heat is trapped because there is no way for it to escape.

Memory foam mattress on the other hand is made of open cells that are billions of balloons with holes in them. This allows warm air to escape so it is not warm when you sleep on it.

If the regular foam mattress forces you to adjust to the structure, the memory foam doesn't because it conforms to your body so it relieves pressure points and at the same time supports your weight.
Another feature of the memory foam mattress is that once you get off, it will go back to its original shape because it is designed to spring back in the direction of the pressure. The conventional foam mattress tries to do that but it can't because it springs back upward and downward.

Memory foam mattresses are generally softer than conventional foam mattresses when you lie down on the bed but after a few minutes, it reacts and adjusts to your body. This is because the top layer softens around your body while the rest remains cool and firm giving you good support.

This type of mattress is also temperature sensitive which means it could be too soft during high temperatures. This does not mean that there is a defect in the product but this is how it really is. For those who live in such climates, getting a thicker foam mattress is enough to do the trick.

Now that you some facts about the memory foam, you already have an idea what it can do for

you. The only thing to do now is choose the right size that fits your bed frame and then wait for it to be delivered to your home.

Very Very Important Things You Should Know About the Memory Foam Sleep Mattress

Very Very Important Things You Should Know About the Memory Foam Sleep Mattress

Very Very Important Things You Should Know About the Memory Foam Sleep Mattress. Everyone needs a bed. In the past, we were used to using those with a spring in between the foam but now there is a new kind and the things you will know about the memory foam mattress makes it unique.

First of all, the memory foam mattress also referred to as "visco elastic or slow releasing foam" has been around for more than a decade. Originally designed for astronauts, it has been successful in medical science by helping people with muscle pains and difficulty in sleeping.

As a result, it is also being used in hospitals to help prevent bed sores from being confined in the bed for so long. The mattresses' innovative elastic properties automatically senses your body's weight and temperature then responds to your exact shape and position. When you get out, the bed goes back to its original form.

The difference with this new mattress compared to the old one is that this one moulds to your body and not the other way around. So, you will never feel pressure that causes a reduction in blood supply or any inevitable discomfort.

This is very true for back sufferers who complain about this ever time they turn into bed. This forces them to alter their sleeping position or at worse, wake up in the middle of the night.

Memory foam mattresses are available in different sizes and density. This is calculated in kilograms per cubic meter. The higher the density, the smaller the air bubbles in the foam structure. Some people say that this is more of an disadvantage than an advantage because it can cause heat build up within the mattress.

The memory foam mattress is temperature sensitive as it reacts to the heat given off by the body. If the density in the foam is too high, the air holes in the foam become tiny and reduces the ability of the foam to breathe. This is what causes overheating at night which is why the ideal density of the foam that people should buy is between 40 and 65 kilograms.

This can also be prevented of course by buying a cool max cover as this helps with the ventilation because it is specially engineered to disperse heat and moisture helping you stay cool so you feel refreshed and rested when you wake up in the morning.

Another thing to consider when buying a memory foam mattress is its depth. When you are looking for one, make sure that this is 7cm to 10 cm so you get maximum support and pressure and relief.

There are seven points in the body that the memory foam mattress. These are namely the head, shoulders, pelvic area, calves, heels, hips and back.

By having a memory foam mattress at home, you can prevent tension headaches, fibrosis's, muscle pain, circulatory problems, soreness or chaffed skin, swollen and painful hip joints caused by interface pressure as well as back pain.

Now that you know the basic things about the memory foam mattress, the only thing you have to do now is go out there and buy one. This is sold in stores while you can also find a few online. The important thing is that you get to sleep peacefully at night so are ready to face a brand new day.

Many patients ask us, "What is the best mattress to buy?" Unfortunately, there has not been extensive medical research or controlled clinical trials on the topic of mattresses and back pain. (Claims that a mattress is "orthopedic" or "medically-approved" should therefore be viewed skeptically.) Mattresses are largely a matter of personal preference.

This is due to several factors:

1. There are many different types and causes of back problems. What works for one person might not be the best option for another.

2. Our bodies are all different. Different weights, heights, and builds may help dictate what one should look for in a mattress or pillow.

3. The causes of back pain are quite complex, and it's difficult to isolate whether or not a mattress or pillow has played a significant role in causing pain.

4. In addition to mattresses and pillows, there are other factors that affect sleep comfort. Medication side effects, irregular sleep patterns, use of caffeine/alcohol/tobacco, sleep apnea, obesity, and anxiety/stress are all common causes of disrupted sleep.

General Rules of Thumb When Choosing a Mattress

Most people prefer a firmer mattress that provides more support. A good mattress should provide support while allowing for the natural curves of the spine. A mattress is too soft if it sags, or if a second person in the bed causes the other to dip toward the center. Studies have found that a medium-firm mattress provides the best back support and alleviates the most back pain. A mattress that is too hard, though, causes aches and pains at pressure points, such as the shoulders and hips. A mattress is too firm if there are gaps between any part of your body and the mattress. Any mattress that helps a person sleep well, so that he/she awakes feeling rested and refreshed, without pain or stiffness, is the best mattress for that individual.

Mattress Composition

The following physical components are the important features of most high-quality mattresses:

Springs and Coils

These give firmness for back support. The wire in the coils can be varying thicknesses. Lower gauge wire is thicker and stiffer, meaning the mattress is firmer. A greater quantity of coils indicates a higher-quality mattress.

Mattress Padding

This is the part that provides comfort. Padding is usually made of polyurethane foam, puffed-up polyester, or cotton batting. Some mattresses have a foam layer just below the quilted top layer. Softer foams feel almost moist to the touch, and firmer foams do not spring back as quickly. Below this layer, there is a layer of cotton batting that caused the mattress to feel firmer in areas such as the middle of the mattress. Finally, there is an insulation layer that lies on top of the coil springs so that they cannot be felt from the top of the mattress. It also protects the coils from damaging the top layers.

Mattress Ticking and Quilting

The outer layer of a mattress is the ticking, a polyester or cotton-polyester blend. The mattress quilting attaches the ticking to the top layers of padding. A good quality mattress has consistent, unbroken stitching.

Box Spring

The box spring adds another level of support to the mattress. They usually consist of a wooden or metal frame with springs. Plain wood frames make mattresses feel harder than one with springs. Purchasing a mattress and box spring as a set maximizes the life of the mattress.

Foam Mattresses

Some other types of mattresses are made of latex foam or "memory" foam. These can be purchased in different densities--the higher the density, the more firm it is.

Mattresses for Specific Back Conditions

In general, the two best sleeping positions are either on your back with a pillow under your knees (to keep stress off the lower back), or on your side with a pillow between your knees (to keep your hips and lower spine aligned). Sleeping on your stomach is not recommended. It places a lot of stress on your lower back and torque on your neck, since you have to keep your head turned to breathe. Also, you should not sleep with your arms above your head, as this can irritate the brachial plexus, a sensitive nerve bundle between your neck and shoulder.

People with degenerative spondylolisthesis or osteoarthritis may prefer an adjustable bed (one that is at a slight incline) as it minimizes joint compression. This type of bed may also be helpful for those who suffer from gastroesophageal reflux (GERD). Patients who have hip bursitis (inflammation of the bursa over the hips) are especially susceptible to pain from a mattress that is too firm. Thick pillow tops or egg crate mattress pads may provide some relief.

Tips for Buying a Mattress

1. Personal preference is the ultimate determination. Choose a mattress that meets your own standards for comfort and support.

2. Inquire about the physical components of the mattress, including number and arrangement of coils, padding thickness, and mattress depth.

3. Find a balance between back support and comfort. If a mattress is supportive, but not comfortable, it will not help your sleep.

4. Know when it is time to buy a new mattress. Most mattresses have a life span of about 7 years. If a mattress sags in the middle or if it is no longer comfortable, it is time for a new mattress. Putting a board under a sagging mattress is only a short-term fix.

5. Shop for value and quality, not price. High quality mattresses are worth the investment if you consider the savings on health-care costs and greater productivity when getting pain-free, restful sleep. Mattress stores often have sales and promotions, so comparison-shop after choosing what mattress you would like.

6. Test-drive your mattress. Sleep on different mattresses in hotels or at friends' homes. When at the store, lay on the mattress with your shoes off for at least ten minutes. If two people will be sleeping on the same mattress, do this together to make sure you are both comfortable.

7. Shop for the best customer service. Consider delivery options, old mattress removal policies, warranty, and return policies. Give high preference to stores that will let you return the mattress within two to four weeks if you are not satisfied.

8. Take good care of your mattress. Mattresses should be rotated every six months, both turned 180 degrees and flipped lengthwise.

Getting a good night's rest is very important. A simple change in your mattress may make the difference between waking with back pain and waking rested and refreshed.

Simple, Best & Useful guide for Choosing Sleeping Bed's and Sleep Mattress

Simple, Best & Useful guide for Choosing Sleeping Bed's and Sleep Mattress

If you find you are not sleeping well it may be due to an old and uncomfortable bed. How much time we spend in bed can affect its durability. If the mattress is lumpy and the springs are too bouncy it might be time to go shopping. We also change as we age. A person who has once slept best on a soft mattress may be more suited to a harder mattress later in life, or, vice versa. Weight gain and weight loss can all effect how we react to our mattresses. A mattress might be perfect for one person but if two people start using it there could be difficulties. Studies have shown that beds can lose up to 70% of their original hardiness over 10 years.

How Do I Select a Mattress?

Before shopping for a mattress you need to arm yourself with pertinent information. First determine what type of bed is best for you. Do you like soft or hard beds? Would you prefer a standard mattress or a foam mattress? If you are not sure, go try out a few different mattress types. Second, consider your budget. This is not a purchase you want to scrimp on, as a poor night's sleep can affect your whole day. Try to get as much value as you can for your budget. Finally, size is a very important factor especially if there is more than one person sleeping in the bed. Ideally, you should both be able to lie on the bed with your arms behind your heads and not touch. A bed needs to be 10-15 cm longer than the tallest person sleeping in that bed. Also pay attention to the height. Lower beds can be easy to get into but harder to get out of. High beds can be hard to get into, especially for shorter people, but very easy to hop out of in the morning.

The Exterior of a Mattress

The mattress exterior is called ticking. Visually it is really not too important to select a "pretty" mattress as it will be covered most of the time. Instead you want to make sure the ticking is sturdy and well made and not prone to ripping. The higher quality ticking is made of material that is knitted or woven using cotton or viscose yarn. Cheaper mattresses are made of polypropylene or polyester. The cheapest mattresses are made of stitchbond or bonded cloth. Manufacturers now make external mattress covers with special features such as anti-allergy, anti-bacterial and anti-static. They may be resistant to staining, water and fire. Amazingly enough, there are even mattresses that give off different scents conducive to a good night's sleep.

Spring Mattresses

There are three basic types of spring mattresses. A continuous spring mattress is made from a single piece of wire woven into many springs. The springs are linked in a vertical pattern. The wire is soft and the coils are small. This generates more reaction from the mattress. An open coil mattress is the most common form of mattress. The springs are arranged horizontally and connected at their tops and on the bottom by a twisting wire. The rods that run around the edge of the coils add strength. A pocket spring mattress has coils that are placed in fabric coverings. Instead of working as a unit, these springs function separately. As a result movement between partners on the same bed can not be felt by the other.

Foam Mattresses

Latex foam mattresses are quite responsive as they are actually made from rubber tree sap. Known for their durability, they also have anti-allergy and anti-microbial characteristics. These mattresses bounce back to their original shape as soon as you get off the bed. Pressure is evenly distributed too. A viscose elastic or memory foam bed is made of polyurethane foam. It does not respond as quickly as a latex foam mattress but is excellent at relieving pressure points on the body. This foam mattress has several different densities making some harder than others. Polyurethane foam beds are petroleum based. They too come in different densities and are one of the more popular foam beds.

Water Beds

Waterbeds usually get their support from the amount of water in the mattress. There is no pressure on the body at all. These beds are known to be perfect for people suffering from allergies. Wave motion varies between beds. Some waterbeds also come with heaters to keep the bed warm.

Futons are an Asian invention. They are normally made from multiple layers of fibre or cotton. In the UK they are popular with younger people who are on a very tight budget as they are very affordable. The mattresses can be used on the floor or a frame can be purchased to make it more of a bed.

Divan Bed Bases

Divans are simply boxes on wheels so they can be easily moved or boxes on legs so there is storage underneath. Sprung edge divans have coils or springs set on a frame. These are the most expensive style. Platform divans have a hardboard top and are quite firm. Firm edge divans are made with small durable springs in a wood frame. Flexible slatted divans are crafted with bendable wood creating a slight bounciness. The slat tension can be adjusted as needed on these flexible slatted beds.

Bedsteads are what most of us consider a typical bed frame. The mattress support is usually made of wood slats that can be very flexible or tough and rigid. Wire mesh is another material used to make the support. The more rigid and cheap slats are further apart but the gap should not exceed 10cm. In addition, the wider the space between the slats, the more likely your mattress will be to wear out.

Adjustable Bases

Adjustable beds are becoming more and more popular but they are still very expensive. They make it easy to sleep or read as the bed can be raised or lowered as needed. They are also very helpful for people with medical conditions. GERD (acid reflux) patients find there is less pain sleeping in a raised position. In some situations the end of the bed raises and this can help patients who suffer from leg cramps. Most of these beds come as single beds. There are also double sized beds with the two sides independently adjustable. Some extreme adjustable beds can have up to 5 areas that can be altered. From the head to the feet and every point in between, these are considered the elite of adjustable beds. Because the mattresses are made especially to suit each bed it is best to purchase the two together.

Hard Vs Soft Mattress

Mattresses come in a wide range of solidity. From the ultra soft to the extremely hard, it is more a matter of preference than necessity. However, there are some basic truths that hold for the majority of us. Very soft cloud-like mattresses can wreak havoc on bad backs. This is because there is very little support in a soft mattress. While hard mattresses might be better for a bad back, very hard mattresses can cause just as much trouble. It all boils down to what works best for each individual.

Mattresses for Overweight People

For those who prefer foam mattresses and are overweight consider the latex mattress or the visco elastic mattress. Because these mattresses have no springs there are no painful pressure points exacerbated by the extra weight. In addition overweight people tend to wear out spring mattresses faster than foam mattresses. When buying a foam mattress select a high-density style, as it will last quite a bit longer. Another good option for overweight people is an air mattress. Once again there are no pressure points causing pain. The firmness is easily adjusted by adding or releasing air. If an overweight person must purchase a spring mattress try to get an inner coil mattress. Their construction is perfectly suited to heavier individuals.

The Warranty

The best way to protect your mattress purchase is to make sure it comes with a warranty. A typical warranty will last between 10 and 20 years. They basically cover any flaws in the mattress. If the construction is faulty or the materials are abnormally inadequate then you should be covered. Adjustable beds, water beds and airbeds will also have warranties on the various parts such as the motor or the controls. Keep in mind the warranty will not cover the bed for normal deterioration.

When buying a mattress don't fall for the first soft bed. Visit different mattress dealers and try out several different bed styles. Try to buy the full bed set at once, mattress and frame, so you are sure they fit each other perfectly. Carefully read the warranty before committing to a bed frame and mattress.

Let's Discuss the Great Benefits of Pocket Springs (Sleep Mattress)

Let's Discuss the Great Benefits of Pocket Springs (Sleep Mattress)

Let's Discuss the Great Benefits of Pocket Springs (Sleep Mattress)

Let's Discuss the Great Benefits of Pocket Springs (Sleep Mattress)

For a good night's sleep, it is important that a mattress adjusts to your body and not the other way around. Mattresses using pocket springs have become very popular. Here's a look at the benefits and advantages they offer over traditional mattresses. Let's Discuss the Great Benefits of Pocket Springs (Sleep Mattress)

Springs Move Independently and Support Your Body

A pocket spring mattress contains hundreds, sometimes thousands of separate springs encased in their individual soft fabric pockets under layers of sumptuous fillings. The springs work independently of each other at exactly the right tension, so if there are two people on the bed, the mattress will support each person individually. Each and every precise spring is designed to adjust to your body movement and provide deep support, throughout the night. When you lie down on a pocket spring mattress, you will be able to feel it adapt and contour to your body shape and this gives complete support from head to toe. It greatly reduces the roll together and roll-off effect of mattresses. It is the ideal choice when there is a weight difference between partners because each person will get the support they require for a good night's sleep.

Comes With a Choice of Tensions

You can choose the mattress keeping in mind the tension of the springs. The standard tensions are soft, medium and firm, so you can be assured of good support. The pocket sprung mattress will absorb your body weight. As it gives support in all the right places especially to the back, a pocket sprung mattress is the perfect choice to diminish back pain and protect the back muscles. Your back will be supported and protected at the correct degree and with firmness.

Cost Effective and Excellent Value for Money

A pocket sprung mattress is long lasting, durable and cost effective. Due to its robustness, it does not wear out easily and you can use it for many years without even turning it over. The pocket sprung mattress comes with a long life span and is the best option for mid range mattresses.

Luxurious Feel

The springs are concealed in layers of plush padding and housed in separate soft fabric pockets. The pocket spring mattress is soft and often covered with opulent and luxurious material giving it a rich and stylish look. It has a deep cushioning effect and provides a great level of comfort and luxury that will help your mind rest and relax so you can be completely refreshed the next morning.

Rest Assured is famous for their sumptuous Rest Assured beds and Rest Assured Mattresses which offer a sublime night's sleep in luxurious comfort. All the ranges of Rest Assured have a selection of mattresses with different spring counts which are indicated by the number following the product name. For example The Athena 2000 is a king size mattress that has 2000 separate pocket springs. The presence of more springs means that that each spring has less body weight to support. The impact is spread over thousands of tiny springs, thus making the mattress more responsive and supportive.

Spring Sleep Mattresses - Coiled to Excellence & Magnificence

Spring Sleep Mattresses - Coiled to Excellence & Magnificence

Spring Sleep Mattresses - Coiled to Excellence & Magnificence

Spring Sleep Mattresses - Coiled to Excellency With Magnificence

Most of the world sleeps on springs. The spring mattress, that is. There are several good reasons for that. Chief among them is the fact that the spring mattress has proven itself a good option for more than a century. However, today, with other options, such as memory foam, waterbeds and air mattresses, are springs still a good choice? The answer is 'yes' and let's find out why!

Brief History of Mattresses

Mattresses, of course, have been with us for centuries. In ancient days, the mattresses were little more than stuffed mats. The idea of springs on the bed started with the box spring, which provided a support for the mattress. It was introduced in the 19th century. Then, in the 1930s, spring began showing up as a filler for the mattress, to provide a firmer sleeping experience. From this point, the whole mattress industry was born. Today, that industry includes heavyweights such as Silentnight mattresses, Sealy mattresses, Rest Assured mattresses and others.

Types of Spring Mattresses

Not all spring mattresses are made alike. There are actually different spring configurations whether you buy Sealy beds, Silentnight beds or Rest Assured beds. The chief difference lies in the coils.

  • Most common are the Bonnell coils, which are shaped like an hourglass, with the ends of the wire knotted or wrapped around the bottom and top circular portions.
  • With encased coils, each coil is wrapped separately in a textile material.
  • Marshall coils are wrapped inside a fabric encasement. They're usually tempered.
  • Offset coils are sturdy, stable and designed to hinge so that they better conform to the shape of the body.
  • Continuous coils work with a hinging effect similar to the offset coil. It's a continuous piece of metal that forms one row in an up and down fashion.

Benefits of Spring Mattresses

With the new technology found in memory foam mattresses, are there still advantages to the old-fashioned spring mattress? Absolutely! Look for the spring variety while buying Silentnight mattresses, Sealy mattresses or Rest Assured mattresses can experience the different it can make. Here are a few advantages for you to consider.

  • The spring mattress is almost always the most affordable option.
  • They will hold their original shape longer than the memory foam mattress will.
  • The spring mattress keeps the body cooler. This is because the memory foam mattress, by design, molds itself to every curve of the body, leaving nowhere for the air to touch. A spring mattress leaves more of the body untouched by the mattress, allowing cooling air to reach those parts.

Is One Spring Mattress As Good As the Next?

Having said this, not every spring mattress is necessarily a good buy. You should still make sure that you buy only from trusted names. This means, deal with retailers with a good reputation and buy mattresses from those who are brand leaders. Names such as Sealy beds, Silentnight beds and Rest Assured beds will probably last longer than some generic off-brand. Even if Silentnight beds or beds from these other manufacturers are a bit more expensive, a better night's sleep will be worth it.
